Seven aspiring doctors, all first-year students of Vandanam Medical College, were headed to Kochi when the car they were traveling in collided with a bus in Alappuzha district's Kalarkode area.
A collision occurred between a state-owned Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) passenger bus and an MBBS student's vehicle in Alappuzha district of Kerala on Dec 2, resulting in the deaths of five MBBS students and leaving two others critically injured.
At approximately 9 pm, a group of seven students was reportedly driving a Chevrolet Tavera at high speed when the accident took place.
The car was completely wrecked by the impact, with photos showing a mangled vehicle, shattered windows, and a damaged bus bonnet.
Alappuzha Municipal Vice-Chairman P S M Hussain said that the car attempted to overtake another vehicle when it applied the brakes, causing it to skid and collide with an oncoming KSRTC bus.
The students were reportedly headed to Kochi.
"We are awaiting CCTV footage from the area, as the location of the accident has surveillance cameras," Hussain said.
According to locals, the car driver was overtaking another vehicle before applying the brakes, skidding, and colliding with the bus. The investigation is underway.
According to officials, rescue personnel had to break through the damaged remains of the car to free the victims, identified as Mohammed, Muhasin, Ibrahim, Devanand, and Shreedeep.
Two students died while being taken to the hospital, while three of the seven students died on the spot.
The injured students have been admitted to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital for treatment. The victims were first-year students at Vandanam Medical College.
According to the police, four passengers on the state bus traveling from Guruvayur to Kayamkulam had minor injuries and are in stable condition.
On Dec 3, hundreds gathered at the Medical College auditorium to pay tribute to the five MBBS students who tragically died in a car accident.
Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, along with ministers Saji Cherian (Fisheries, Culture, and Youth Affairs), Veena George (Health and Women & Child Development), and P. Prasad (Agriculture), offered their respects.
Alappuzha Collector Alex Varghese announced that the state government would cover the funeral expenses and arrange ambulances to transport the bodies to their homes. Autopsies were completed by 11 am.
