Stampede at New Delhi Railway Station

A few days after the tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Feb 15 that left at least 18 dead and 15 injured, authorities have ramped up crowd control measures, deploying additional security forces and enhancing CCTV surveillance.

While the situation remains tense with large passenger influx due to the Maha Kumbh Mela, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ruled out any conspiracy behind the incident, stating there was no unusual rush at the time.

Enhanced security and crowd management

A team of police officials visited the station on Monday to examine CCTV footage and piece together the sequence of events leading to the stampede. Meanwhile, security has been significantly tightened, with eight companies of paramilitary forces deployed inside and outside the station. Joint Commissioner of Police (Transport) Vijay Singh and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) KPS Malhotra are personally overseeing the situation.

Authorities have implemented several crowd control measures, including barricades, quick reaction teams, and intensified patrolling. A designated waiting area, or ‘pandal,’ has been set up outside the station to manage the overflow of passengers until Feb 26, when the Maha Kumbh Mela concludes. Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel are also conducting regular patrols to ensure smooth passenger movement.

Minister dismisses conspiracy theories, promises reforms

Addressing reporters, Vaishnaw dismissed claims of a conspiracy, stating, "No conspiracy looks at the moment." He also ruled out platform change announcements as a cause for the chaos, asserting that the inquiry committee is investigating the matter thoroughly.

To prevent future incidents, the railway ministry plans to establish holding areas at 60 high-footfall stations and introduce a dedicated crowd management manual. Awareness campaigns are also being launched to discourage passengers from sitting on stairs, a major contributing factor in the tragedy.

What caused stampede?

According to railway officials, the station's 16 platforms have a total capacity of 48,000 passengers at any given time. On February 15, ticket sales indicated a slight increase in footfall, but not an extraordinary rush.

The incident occurred around 8:30 PM when an announcement was made for a special Prayagraj-bound train at platform 12. Some passengers, however, mistook it for the Prayagraj Express, which was scheduled to depart from platform 14. In their rush to change platforms, chaos ensued on the stairs, where many were seated. A passenger carrying a heavy load reportedly lost balance and fell, triggering the stampede.

Vaishnaw pointed out that live feed from railway control rooms did not indicate overcrowding at any station. He emphasized that railway authorities had prepared extensively for crowd management during the Maha Kumbh Mela, operating over 12,500 special trains compared to 4,000 in the previous event.

Heartbreaking stories emerge

As authorities investigate the tragedy, families continue to mourn their loved ones. Poonam Devi, a visitor from Bihar, had come to Delhi to meet her daughter before heading back home. Her journey ended in disaster.

Prabhu Shah, a grieving father, lost his 24-year-old daughter, who had moved to Delhi just six months ago for her first job. She was traveling to the Kumbh Mela with her aunt and cousin when the tragedy struck.

Manoj, a daily wage worker and sole breadwinner for his family, also lost his life, leaving behind his wife and two children in despair.

As the investigation unfolds, survivors and families of victims seek answers, hoping that lessons learned from this tragedy will prevent future mishaps at one of India’s busiest railway hubs.
