The annual Global Cities Index Report ranks approximately 1,000 of the world's largest cities across 163 countries in five key areas.
Delhi has achieved the 350th position in the 2024 Oxford Economics Global Cities Index, making it the top-ranked city in India. The index compares the world's 1,000 largest cities. Bengaluru, known as India's IT capital, ranked 411th, surpassing Mumbai, the financial hub of the country, which ranked 427th.
Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, on the other hand, was at the bottom of the index, ranking 1000th.
The Global Cities Index Report, released on May 21, is an annual publication that ranks about 1,000 of the world's largest cities across 163 countries in five key areas.
The index is derived from scores in categories such as Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment, and Governance. These scores are combined to create an overall ranking for each city. In 2023, the cities included in the report accounted for 60% of the global GDP and 30% of the world's population.
New York once again topped all five categories with a perfect score of 100, followed by London and San Jose in the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively.
In terms of quality of life, Mumbai was ranked 915th, while Thrissur, a city in Kerala, secured the 757th position in India. Saharanpur, a city in Uttar Pradesh, had the lowest rank at 966th place.
Delhi ranked 55th in the Human Capital category and 108th in the Economics category, while Bengaluru ranked 179th in Human Capital and 171st in Economics.
All Indian cities received a score of 380 in the Governance category.
Cities under military control or on the brink of war outranked many Indian cities. For example, Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, ranked 311th, surpassing Delhi, India's highest-ranked city. Similarly, Myanmar, which has been under military control since 2021, ranked 680th, higher than most Indian cities.
The Oxford Economics Global Cities Index offers a comprehensive evaluation of the world's 1,000 largest cities. The report assigns scores to 1,000 cities, and rankings are based on these scores. The city with the highest score receives a score of 100. The report takes into account not only the city's economic performance but also factors such as education levels, resident well-being, climate volatility, political risks, and more.
