fter a brief and limited respite, heatwave conditions are expected to intensify again across Delhi-NCR this week, with temperatures likely to remain near 45°C before possible rain activity later in the week.

Delhi-NCR is heading into another intense stretch of heatwave conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of scorching temperatures, gusty winds and dust storm activity across the region over the coming days.
According to the IMD forecast, maximum temperatures in parts of Delhi are expected to hover between 44°C and 45°C through much of the week, with isolated areas likely to continue experiencing heatwave conditions until at least Friday.

The warning comes after only marginal relief from the extreme heat over the weekend.
On May 24, several parts of the capital continued to record temperatures significantly above seasonal averages. Safdarjung, Delhi’s base weather station, recorded temperatures well above normal levels, while some localities across northwest Delhi and outer NCR regions remained among the hottest zones.
The IMD has also forecast strong surface winds and dust storm activity across Delhi-NCR during the ongoing heat spell. Wind speeds could reach 30–40 kmph in some areas, particularly during evening hours.
While brief dust storms may bring temporary dips in temperature, weather officials said they are unlikely to provide sustained relief from the larger heatwave pattern currently affecting northwestern India.
The weather department has indicated that a more meaningful change in conditions, including possible light rain or thunderstorms, may occur later this week.
Delhi’s heatwave intensifies
The capital has witnessed repeated heatwave alerts over the past several days as temperatures surged across large parts of north India.
Earlier this week, Delhi recorded some of its hottest temperatures of the season, with stations such as Ridge and Mungeshpur crossing 46°C.
The IMD has already issued yellow and orange alerts at different stages of the ongoing heatwave cycle, warning residents about prolonged exposure risks, dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
The city also recently experienced one of its warmest May nights in more than a decade, with high nighttime temperatures reducing chances of recovery from daytime heat stress.
Power demand and outdoor work under pressure
The prolonged heatwave has also increased pressure on Delhi-NCR’s power infrastructure, with electricity demand rising sharply because of continuous cooling requirements across homes and commercial spaces.
Outdoor workers, including construction labourers, delivery personnel and street vendors, continue to remain among the most vulnerable groups during the ongoing heat spell.
Health authorities have repeatedly advised residents to avoid direct sun exposure during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated and monitor symptoms of heat exhaustion.
The current weather pattern forms part of a broader heatwave affecting several regions across north and central India this month. The IMD had earlier warned that above-normal heatwave days were likely across parts of northwest India during the summer season.
