An Indian Army helicopter carrying senior officers crash-landed near Leh during a routine sortie, with all occupants escaping safely before a selfie taken at the site surfaced online.

An Indian Army helicopter carrying senior officers crash-landed in Leh on Saturday, with all occupants escaping unhurt in what officials described as a “narrow escape”.
According to defence officials, the helicopter went down during a routine operational sortie in the high-altitude Ladakh region. The exact cause of the crash has not yet been officially confirmed, though preliminary indications suggest a technical issue may have forced the emergency landing.

Officials said all Army personnel on board were safely evacuated and did not suffer major injuries. The Army has ordered a Court of Inquiry to investigate the incident and determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
Shortly after the incident, a selfie reportedly taken by the officers at the crash site began circulating on social media, drawing widespread attention online. The image showed smiling Army personnel standing near the damaged helicopter against the mountainous Ladakh terrain.
The incident occurred in Leh, a strategically important region where Army and Air Force helicopters frequently operate for logistics, surveillance and troop movement in difficult high-altitude conditions. Flying in Ladakh is considered particularly challenging because of thin air, unpredictable weather and rugged terrain.
Military helicopters operating in the region are routinely used to transport personnel, supplies and equipment to forward areas along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
While aviation incidents in the region are relatively uncommon, experts say high-altitude operations place significant stress on aircraft performance and require specialised flying conditions.
Defence authorities have not yet disclosed the model of the helicopter involved or the number of officers on board at the time of the crash. Further details are expected after the inquiry begins.
