The Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into a controversial proposal to procure luxury boats for Yamuna inspections, even as officials clarify the tender will not be scrapped but revised to focus on essential operational needs.

Facing criticism over a ₹6.2 crore VIP boat proposal for the Yamuna, Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Verma has ordered a probe into the tender process and specifications.
The proposal involves the purchase of two air-conditioned boats with enclosed cabins for VIPs and VVIPs, each costing around ₹3.1 crore. The vessels were designed to accommodate 16 to 20 people and include features such as marine air conditioning, business-class seating, a pantry and washrooms.

Despite the inquiry, the government has indicated that the tender will not be cancelled. Instead, its conditions will be revised to ensure that any procurement is strictly need-based and limited to essential functions such as surveillance, pollution monitoring and other operational requirements.
The Irrigation and Flood Control department has also issued a corrigendum extending the bidding deadline, citing administrative reasons. The revised last date for submission is now March 27.
The proposal has drawn criticism from Opposition leaders, who questioned the use of public funds for high-end facilities at a time when the Yamuna continues to face severe pollution challenges. Critics argued that resources should instead be directed toward cleaning the river and improving infrastructure.
Officials, however, have maintained that boats are required for inspections and operational activities related to river management, including monitoring during the monsoon and emergency situations. At present, such boats are typically hired as needed.
The controversy has put the spotlight on government spending priorities, with the outcome of the inquiry expected to determine whether and how the procurement plan proceeds.
