Iconic Karna of BR Chopra’s epic remembered for his towering performances, enduring legacy, and deep connection with fans.

Veteran actor Pankaj Dheer, immortalized as the valiant Karna in BR Chopra’s television epic Mahabharat, passed away on October 15, following a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 68. The news was confirmed by his longtime friend and CINTAA member Amit Behl.
Dheer had been grappling with the disease for some time, and despite undergoing major surgery, his condition relapsed in recent months, leaving him critically ill. The Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA) released a statement mourning his loss:

"With profound grief and deep sorrow, we inform you of the passing of our Trust’s erstwhile Chairman and CINTAA's former Hon. General Secretary, Shri Pankaj Dheer ji, on 15th October 2025. The cremation will be held today at 4:30 pm, next to Pawan Hans, Vile Parle (W), Mumbai."
Beyond Mahabharat, Dheer’s versatile career spanned films like Sanam Bewafa and Baadshah, and popular TV shows including Chandrakanta and Sasural Simar Ka. He also ventured behind the camera, directing the film My Father Godfather, and nurturing talent through the Abhinay Acting Academy.
Dheer’s portrayal of Karna left a mark far beyond the screen. In interviews, he spoke of the enduring love audiences had for his character, noting statues and temples erected in his honor. “I also have two temples where Puja is done every day. People come there and worship. This goes to show they have accepted me as Karna. It becomes very difficult for others to play that role again,” he had shared.
He is survived by his wife, Anita Dheer, and son, actor Nikitin Dheer, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by fans and the Indian television industry for generations.
