Registration for the 2026–27 batch will remain open until Nov 12. The course is scheduled to begin on Nov 16 and will be conducted entirely online. The enrolment fee is ₹2,000.

NCERT science teaching course details

The programme consists of 40 modules, with each module designed to be completed in about one week. NCERTX lists an estimated study requirement of six to eight hours per week. The modules cover both science content and approaches to teaching and learning science.

The syllabus includes topics such as how scientific knowledge is built, how children learn, active learning, teaching-learning strategies and assessment in science.

It also covers areas of science including physical and chemical changes, acids and bases, motion, force, energy, light, electricity, magnetism, sound, astronomy, microorganisms, cells, photosynthesis, human biology, ecosystems and biodiversity.

The course is intended to help teachers develop lesson plans, use alternative learning resources and multimedia, and adopt approaches that encourage questioning, exploration and critical thinking among students.

Who can apply for th course

NCERTX, NCERT’s online learning platform, says the programme is primarily aimed at teachers teaching Science in Classes 6 to 8. Its stated target group also includes pre-service teachers and other individuals involved in science education.

The platform's eligibility information includes candidates with a Bachelor of Science degree, in-service teachers teaching Science in Classes 6 to 8, candidates with a diploma or degree in education, pre-service teachers pursuing an education diploma or degree, and others directly involved in science education.

Assessment and certification

The course includes assessments alongside the weekly modules. NCERTX's course information states that learners are required to complete the module assessments and a final examination. Those who successfully complete the programme receive an e-certificate from NCERT for "Teaching of Science at Middle Stage".

NCERTX also makes clear that the programme is an academic course and should not be treated as equivalent to a qualification required for appointment as a teacher or as an exemption from such a qualification.

The new batch will therefore give science educators an online professional development option focused specifically on teaching and learning at the middle-school level, without requiring physical attendance.
