Legendary actor Asrani, whose impeccable comic timing entertained audiences for over five decades, passed away peacefully on October 20 afternoon at the age of 84, leaving a deep void in Indian cinema.

Hospitalized earlier due to breathing complications, Asrani had requested his wife, Manju Asrani, not to announce his passing immediately, avoiding any public commotion. His death was later confirmed by his manager, Babubhai Thiba.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute, writing on X: “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Govardhan Asrani Ji. A gifted entertainer and a truly versatile artist, he entertained audiences across generations… His contribution to Indian cinema will always be cherished. Om Shanti.”

The film industry and fans have flooded social media with heartfelt tributes. Akshay Kumar, who worked with Asrani in several Priyadarshan comedies including Bhagam Bhaag, Khatta Meetha, and De Dana Dan, recalled their last meeting just a week ago on the set of Asrani’s final film, Haiwaan. “Speechless with grief… he had the most legendary comic timing. What an absolute loss to our industry. God bless you, Asrani Sir,” Akshay wrote.

Anupam Kher remembered him as a force of joy both on and off screen: “We will miss you in physical form! But cinema and your ability to make people laugh will keep you alive for years to come! Om Shanti.” Singer-composer Adnan Sami recalled Asrani’s dedication to his iconic Sholay ‘Jailer’ persona in his music video Lift Karade.

Asrani’s career spanned more than 350 films, including timeless classics with Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Basu Chatterjee such as Chhoti Si Baat and Abhimaan. His portrayal of the eccentric jailer in Sholay remains one of the most iconic performances in Hindi cinema.

Asrani is survived by his wife, sister, and nephew. His laughter, wit, and cinematic legacy will continue to echo for generations.
