1. IIT Madras Introduces a Facial Recognition Attendance System to Prevent the Suicidal Rate of Students

IIT Madras is set to implement a facial recognition attendance system and a parent-app coordination initiative as part of its suicide prevention approach following 4 student suicides that occurred between February and July 2023.

Starting in the upcoming academic year in August, IIT Madras will introduce 2 new practices. One is a facial recognition attendance management system aimed at identifying students who are absent for extended periods. Prof. V Kamakoti, the director of IIT Madras, assures that this system will not intrude on anyone’s privacy. It will simply consolidate attendance data from various places like classes, mess, and the gym to observe patterns.

2. IGNOU starts the registration process for the bachelor’s degree program for Agniveer

An MoU has been signed between the IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) and the Indian Army, the Navy, and the Air Force to offer a skill-based bachelor’s degree program for Agniveers. The registration process has already started from August 1. The applicants can visit the official website of IGNOU to register for this program. The website: www.ignou.ac.in

Under this Memorandum, the university has offered five-degree programs:

  1. BAAS: Bachelor of Arts (Applied Skills)
  2. BAASTM: Bachelor of Arts (Applied Skills) Tourism Management
  3. BAASMSME: Bachelor of Arts (Applied Skills) MSME
  4. BCOMAS (Bachelor of Commerce (Applied Skills)
  5. BSCAS: Bachelor of Science (Applied Skills)

These programs consist of 120 credits, out of which courses worth 60 credits are offered by IGNOU, while the remaining 60 credits are offered as in-service skill education by the Armed Forces.

3. NMC Introduces Competency-Based Medical Education Regulations 2023 for MBBS Admissions

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has notified the Competency-Based Medical Education Regulation 2023, a month after withdrawing the guidelines under Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023 on MBBS admissions. The new regulations, effective from August 1, 2023, aim to make medical education more learner-centric, patient-centric, gender-sensitive, outcome-oriented, and environment-appropriate.

The commission designed the undergraduate medical education program to create Indian Medical Graduates (IMG) who possess the necessary knowledge and skills to function effectively as community physicians while having global relevance. The curriculum for MBBS batches admitted from the academic year 2019-20 onwards will be the Competency-based Undergraduate Curriculum and Attitude, Ethics, and Communication (AETCOM) course published by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

4. MoE and MEA jointly launches Study in India portal for International Students

The Ministry of Education today on Friday launched the Study In India (SII) portal, which will cater the international students who are seeking higher education opportunities in India. This program is launched by a joint effort of Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, and Union Minister for External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar, inaugurating the dedicated website to provide comprehensive information about higher education institutions (HEIs) across the country.

5. Union Health Ministry asks AIIMS-Delhi to Limit Ph.D. Scholars and Scientists on Projects to Six Years

The Union Health Ministry has asked AIIMS-Delhi to limit the duration of Ph.D. scholars and scientists engaged in research projects to a maximum of 6 years. As of now, the AIIMS administration has not implemented this directive.

For the past few days, Ph.D. scholars and scientists involved in research projects at AIIMS have been protesting against this decision. The faculty members of the esteemed medical institute have also expressed their disagreement with the decision.

6. IIT Madras hosting JAM 2024 on February 11, Registration opens from September 5

IIT JAM 2024: Candidates will be able to apply by October 13 on the official website, jam.iitm.ac.in. Know eligibility criteria. 7. Both Houses of Parliament passes IIM Amendment Bill

Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha today have approved an important Bill that empowers the President to oversee the management responsibilities of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), designating the President as the Visitor.

This move allows the President of India the authority to scrutinize the operational aspects of IIMs, conduct investigations, and appoint or dismiss directors. Notably, the President already holds a similar position as a visitor at IITs and NITs.

Before becoming law, the Bill must be presented to President Droupadi Murmu.

8. IIM Sambalpur to take a new leap to establish incubation centre: Union Education Minister

The Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday made an announcement that he is planning to start an incubation centre at IIM Sambalpur. He made this announcement during an event of plantation drive and campus tour at the institute where he was the chief guest.

Pradhan highlighted the significance of Sambalpur as the cultural hub of the state and envisioned the crucial role of IIM Sambalpur in transforming the region into an intellectual hub.

9. NTA Announces PhD Entrance Test 2023

NTA PhD Entrance Test 2023: The Ph.D. Entrance Test 2023 registration process has begun online for Delhi University (DU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) institutions. Candidates who meet the requirements and are enthusiastic about pursuing a doctorate in philosophy (Ph.D.) should visit the official website at www.phd-entrance.samarth.ac.in

Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund Scholarships

An initiative of the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund to support the study of Ph.D. in India.

Eligibility: Open to full-time Ph.D. scholars below 35 years as on October 1 of the year of selection. The applicants must be already registered/admitted to a Ph.D. degree at a recognized university/institution in India, and hold a first-class PG degree with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate at the graduate and PG level.

Rewards: ₹18,000 monthly and a contingent allowance of ₹ 15,000
