IIT Madras and University of Leeds Establish Joint Centre of Excellence in Sustainability.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and the University of Leeds have recently announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Joint Virtual Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Development (VCoE-SD).

Prof. Vasilis Sarhosis of the University of Leeds expressed that this partnership aims to cultivate a self-sustaining network of top-tier faculty, seeking avenues for impactful research and innovation to address sustainable development goals.

This collaboration through the MoU intends to foster enhanced joint research endeavors between IIT Madras and the University of Leeds, as well as facilitate joint academic initiatives including the development of new courses, conferences, seminars, symposia, and lectures.

A virtual collaborative group focusing on sustainability has been established as a key initiative. Dr. Satyanarayanan Seshadri, Advisor of Global Partnership at the Office of Global Engagement and Head of The Energy Consortium at IIT Madras, expressed that these faculty-led activities are anticipated to foster significant researcher mobility, joint doctoral and master's programs, and active participation in bilateral and multilateral funding opportunities for research and development.

Moreover, this platform will facilitate the exchange of teaching skills and personnel, student placement opportunities, as well as sharing publications and other materials. This agreement is expected to bolster knowledge and innovation across critical fields, contributing to research and innovation in addressing global challenges.
