Heavy import duties mean the Model Y starts at ₹59.9 lakh (ex-showroom), with deliveries expected in Q3 2025 as Tesla tests the luxury EV market before committing to local production.

Tesla opened its first showroom in India on July 15 at the Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex. The showroom launch marks the company’s formal entry into the Indian market after years of speculation and halted plans.
The Model Y will be Tesla’s first car sold in the country, with the base rear-wheel-drive version priced at ₹59.9 lakh (ex-showroom), and the long-range variant at ₹67.9 lakh.

Due to high import duties of 70% to 100%, the vehicle will cost nearly double compared to its price in the US or China. Tesla has imported an initial batch of six vehicles, all fully built units from its Shanghai plant.
While Tesla has shown interest in setting up a manufacturing plant in India, the current rollout is entirely based on imports. The cars are expected to be delivered by Q3 2025, possibly as early as August. Service infrastructure has already been planned, with a facility being set up in Mumbai’s Kurla area.
The move comes at a time when India is pushing for greater electric vehicle adoption and has introduced schemes offering lower duties for manufacturers investing at least $500 million and setting up local plants within three years.
Tesla has yet to confirm whether it will avail this scheme.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the launch, expressing hope that the brand’s presence would bolster India’s EV ecosystem. With this launch, Tesla enters a market where EVs currently make up less than 5% of total car sales but are expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.
