UGC warns against fake circular on exam cancelation, urges students to trust official sources

The University Grants Commission dismissed a fake notice on May 7 circulating on social media that falsely claimed all university examinations had been cancelled due to a "war-like situation" in the country.

The fabricated advisory also urged students to return home, prompting swift clarification from the commission.

In a statement posted on X, the UGC said, "A fabricated public notice is being circulated under the name of UGC, claiming that all exams are cancelled due to a war situation and advising students to return home. UGC confirms this notice is fake. There are no such directions from UGC."

It further urged students and institutions to rely only on verified sources for updates.

"All official updates are available only on the UGC website and its official social media channels. Spreading such misinformation is a punishable offense. Don't fall for fake information. Stay alert. Follow only official UGC sources," the post added.

The clarification came shortly after India launched airstrikes under Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The mission was carried out in retaliation for the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of several security personnel.

According to defense officials, nine terror-linked sites operated by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were successfully hit during the operation, which aimed to eliminate top operatives responsible for planning attacks on Indian soil.

Following the strikes, Pakistan reportedly breached the Ceasefire Agreement by firing artillery in the Bhimber Gali area of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army responded to the provocation in a "calibrated and appropriate manner."

"Pakistan again violates the Ceasefire Agreement by firing artillery in Bhimber Gali in the Poonch-Rajouri area. The Indian Army is responding appropriately in a calibrated manner," the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) said on X.
