Tripura medical college gets nod to raise MBBS intake to 250

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha recently announced that the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has received approval from the Centre to increase its MBBS intake by 100 seats for the 2026-27 academic session.

According to Saha, the college’s intake will rise from 150 to 250 seats, placing AGMC among medical colleges with a 250-seat annual intake.

However, the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) MBBS seat matrix for 2026-27, issued on September 10 with the seat position as of September 1, lists AGMC’s annual intake at 200 seats. The matrix shows three medical colleges in Tripura with a combined intake of 500 MBBS seats — AGMC with 200, Tripura Medical College and Dr BRAM Teaching Hospital with 150, and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College with 150.

AGMC operates from the premises of Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala.

Saha said the addition of 100 seats would significantly expand the college’s capacity and create more opportunities for aspiring medical students in the state.

He cited institutions such as Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College and King George’s Medical University in Lucknow as examples of colleges with a 250-seat MBBS intake.

The Chief Minister said the expansion would also strengthen Tripura’s healthcare infrastructure by increasing the availability of trained medical professionals.

The latest NMC seat matrix shows that the country added 13,186 MBBS seats, taking the total approved intake to 1,40,214 seats across 836 medical colleges, excluding institutes of national importance such as AIIMS, JIPMER, NIMHANS and PGIMER.

Saha also announced that another private medical college with an annual intake of 100 MBBS students is being established in Dhalai district.

Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J P Nadda, Saha said the Centre’s support would help further strengthen medical education and healthcare facilities in Tripura.

“A stronger medical education system today will build a healthier Tripura tomorrow,” he said.

The state government is also planning to establish a full-fledged medical university to oversee the state’s three medical colleges, including the government-run AGMC, along with nursing colleges and paramedical institutions.

GBP Hospital Deputy Superintendent Kanak Chawdhury said a dedicated team had been working to secure approval for the additional MBBS seats.

“We are in the process of appointing around 25 new faculty members for the new project and creating the necessary infrastructure to accommodate the additional medical students. The approval is a big thing for the state’s medical education,” he said.
