The updated rules aim to clear promotion backlogs, reduce eligibility experience, and provide faster career progression for teachers aspiring to move into school leadership roles across Punjab.
The Punjab government has implemented key reforms to the promotion and recruitment process for school principals, revising rules that had remained unchanged for years despite demands from educators.
According to the latest amendment to the Punjab Educational Services (School and Inspection) Group-A Service Rules, 2018, the share of promotions has been increased from 50% to 75%, while direct recruitment will now be restricted to just 25% of vacancies.
These changes aim to create faster promotion pathways and more leadership opportunities for teachers who have been waiting in line for years.
The amendment has also relaxed the eligibility criteria related to experience.
Lecturers and vocational lecturers will now require five years of service instead of seven.
For headmasters, the required experience has been brought down from five years to four.
Officials said the decision was taken to address long-standing promotion backlogs and offer timely career advancement to eligible teachers.
"This reform is meant to improve school administration efficiency while ensuring fair opportunities for all teachers," an official said.
Education experts welcomed the move, saying it could help fill vacant principal posts faster and bring younger educators into leadership roles earlier in their careers.
