Having an extensive industry work experience spanning over two decades, Basu who joined IIM Calcutta in 2010 is a Professor in the Operations Management group of the reputed Institute. He is a PhD in Production & Quantitative Methods from the prestigious IIM Ahmedabad and has active consulting and research interests in contemporary topics in the Supply chain, Healthcare, Gig and platform economy, and retail operations.
Prof. Basu was awarded the best thesis proposal for the track “Algorithmic Models & Supply Chain” in the international conference titled “Doctoral Colloquium, 2008” organized by IIM, Ahmedabad.
Before being appointed to the highly responsible position, Basu worked as an Associate Professor of the Operations Management Group, IIM Cacultta from 2014-2020, and Assistant Professor Operations Management Group at the Institute from 2010-2014.
Earlier he worked as Assistant Professor of Operations Management Group, XLRI, Jamshedpur from 2009-2010. He was Senior Manager at Wipro Technologies & BPO from 2008-2009 and Process Engineer at Haldia Petrochemicals Limited from 2000-2003.
Prof Basu has a vast experience in research and over two dozen insightful articles to his name in leading journals.
A few of his recent publications in Journals include “Varied offspring memetic algorithm with three parents for a realistic synchronized goods delivery and service problem,” published in Soft Computing, Springer, and “Influenza Vaccine Contracts in Developing Nations - Coordination, Flexibility and Vaccine Coverage, 2023, published in Decision Sciences Journal, Wiley.
‘Vast administrative experience’
Prof. Basu brings along a vast administrative experience in his long outstanding career. A few of his recent administrative positions include Coordinator, Center for Development and Environment Policy, Chairperson, PGPEX-VLMP between 2020 & 2022, and Chairperson, Admissions Committee between 2018 & 2020.
Self-motivated and a highly dedicated professional Prof. Basu has authored and co-authored books including "BELL the CAT" in Managing India: The idea of IIMs and its changing contexts, Routledge, 2024 (Thakur, Manish, and R. Rajesh Babu, eds.) and "Management of mathematics or mathematics of management: Quantitative methods in management" in Management Education in India: Perspectives and Practices. Springer, 2016 (Thakur, Manish, and R. Rajesh Babu, eds.)
He has presented well-researched papers at reputed international conferences including MSOM, INFORMS RMP, INFORMS annual meeting, POMS, Euro, and IFORS, etc. A critical thinker with an inquisitive mind, Prof. Basu was awarded the best paper in IEOM Bangkok in 2019.
He has worked on some highly innovative projects in his career including ‘The state of primary & secondary education in West Bengal: An empirical analysis using DISE data, Heuristic Approaches for Reliable Facility Location Problems (Both internal projects funded by IIM Calcutta-2019) and Study of Court processes and re-engineering opportunities for improving court efficiencies for justice delivery in India (Project funded by Ministry of Judiciary Services- 2018).
Prof. Basu has vast expertise in teaching various courses including Hospital Planning and Structure, Operations Research, Managing Healthcare Operations, and Managerial Problem Solving among many others.
A few of his research interests include Pricing and Revenue Management, Economic Modeling, and Game Theoretic Applications in Business Problems and Platform Operations and Emerging Technologies.
The newly appointed Dean is exceptionally skilled in “Knowledge of operations management and research, Product conceptualization and implementation, Quantitative and statistical modeling and Algorithmic innovations”
Established as the first national institute for Post-Graduate studies and Research in Management by the Government of India in Nov. 1961 in collaboration with the Alfred P.
