PM Modi inaugurates ₹555 crore IIM Guwahati, permanent campus planned at Palasbari

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Feb 14 virtually inaugurated the temporary campus of the Indian Institute of Management Guwahati, marking a key expansion of higher education infrastructure in the Northeast.

Approved by the central government last year, IIM Guwahati will be the second IIM in the Northeast after Shillong and the 22nd in the country.

The permanent campus will be developed at Palasbari near Guwahati, while academic activities will begin at a transit campus in Tech City, Bongora.

IIM Ahmedabad will mentor the institute during its initial phase, according to an Assam government official.

The institute is being set up with an investment of ₹555 crore. Parliament cleared the Indian Institutes of Management Amendment Bill, 2025, last August, enabling the new institution to start admissions.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had earlier stated that the establishment of IIM Guwahati will contribute to India’s goal of becoming the world’s third largest economy.

He highlighted that nine IIMs have been established since 2014, compared with 13 set up between 1961 and 2014. Student intake across IIMs has increased from 3,500 in 2013-14 to 9,800 in 2024-25.
