UP Teachers

More than 70,000 teachers in Uttar Pradesh could soon move up the career ladder after waiting for promotions for nearly 10 years, with the state government reportedly clearing the process ahead of Diwali and the upcoming Assembly elections.

The promotion exercise for teachers under the Basic Education Department has entered its final stages, with instructions issued to complete the process within the stipulated timeline. For teachers who have remained on the same post for years, the move could bring both career progression and an increase in salary.

Who will be promoted?

Primary school assistant teachers are expected to be considered for promotion to principal posts or as assistant teachers in junior basic schools.

Teachers working in junior basic schools could also be promoted to principal and other higher posts, depending on their eligibility and seniority.

Seniority lists to go digital

The preparation of seniority lists has been one of the major hurdles delaying teacher promotions in Uttar Pradesh.

To streamline the exercise and reduce disputes, the promotion process is now being digitised. At the district level, the Basic Education Officer will prepare the final seniority list.

Teachers will then be given an opportunity to raise objections against the list. The final promotion list will be issued after the objections are examined and necessary corrections are made.

For thousands of teachers who have been waiting for years, the completion of the process could mark the end of a long period of uncertainty over career progression.

Recruitment for 12,405 primary teacher posts underway

Meanwhile, recruitment for 12,405 primary teacher posts is underway in Uttar Pradesh. Candidates can submit applications until October 15.

The recruitment has also triggered protests over the number of vacancies. With lakhs of candidates seeking government teaching jobs, aspirants have been demanding that the number of posts be increased, with some calling for the vacancies to be doubled.

The promotion exercise for serving teachers and the ongoing recruitment drive come as the state education department faces pressure to address both career progression for existing teachers and employment opportunities for aspiring recruits.
