More than 50 Gujarat-based qualified candidates, some of whom placed first in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG), filed a petition with the Supreme Court in an attempt to prevent the National Testing Agency (NTA) from canceling the disputed exam.

The candidates have asked the Supreme Court to direct the Union Ministry of Education to investigate, identify, and take decisive action against students and those involved in unfair tactics such as paper leaks and impersonation during the NEET-UG 2024 examination.

Days before a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is set to hear as many as 26 petitions seeking relief, including retests and inquiries into the administration of the exam beset by accusations of malpractice, 56 students have submitted a new plea.

The NTA conducts NEET-UG for applicants seeking admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other relevant programs at government and private universities nationwide.

NEET-UG 2024 was conducted at 4,750 locations, with almost 24 lakh applicants taking the test on May 5.

Opposition political parties have gotten into arguments and protests in a number of places as a result of allegations of irregularities, including paper leaks.

The Supreme Court has scheduled a hearing for July 8 to hear the petitions seeking the cancellation of the exam, retest, and high-level investigation.

Sidhharth Komal Singla and 55 other candidates submitted a new plea through lawyer Devendra Singh.

It stated that "the Hon'ble Court may further direct the respondents (the Centre and the NTA) not to re-conduct NEET-UG, as that would not only be unreasonable and harsh for the honest and hardworking students but also would lead to the infringement of the Right to Education and therefore violate Article 14 (right to equality) of the Constitution."

The petition asked for a directive to the NTA and the Center to find and penalize the examinees who used unethical methods, find the centers, and take necessary action in cases where there has been a “compromise to the established guidelines for NEET-UG 2024 examinations.”
