The textbook uses stories, puzzles, and real-life activities to help young learners explore math concepts through hands-on learning, replacing fear with curiosity, creativity, and active classroom engagement.
A new Class 5 mathematics textbook titled "Maths Mela" has been introduced by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), aiming to make math learning more engaging and experiential for young students.
The launch is aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
Designed to move beyond rote memorization, "Maths Mela" features puzzles, stories, and hands-on activities to help students grasp mathematical concepts in a more relatable and enjoyable way.
NCERT announced the release through a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating its goal to make mathematics both “enjoyable and meaningful” for learners.
The textbook introduces a shift toward application-based learning and is part of NCERT’s broader initiative to revamp school textbooks at foundational and middle-grade levels.
Recently, the council also released new English and Hindi textbooks for Class 5, titled "Santoor" and "Veena," respectively.
For Class 8, updated editions of the English textbook "Poorvi" and the Hindi textbook "Malhar" have also been announced.
Although the physical and digital versions of the new books are not yet publicly available, listings have already appeared on Amazon and NCERT’s official website.
The council has confirmed that the textbooks will soon be accessible to schools, teachers, and students nationwide.
“With 'Maths Mela,' NCERT aims to shift the narrative around mathematics from fear and rigidity to curiosity and discovery,” a council official said. “An approach many educators and parents have long advocated for.”
