NMC cracks down on hidden charges, orders fee disclosure by medical colleges

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed all medical colleges in India to upload course-wise fee structures and stipend information for interns and resident doctors on their official websites.

The instruction applies to all institutions under NMC’s jurisdiction, including private and deemed universities.

According to the notice, colleges must also submit the required data through a designated Google Form within seven days of the notice being issued.

“Any fee collected beyond the declared structure or without proper approval will be deemed unauthorized,” the notice stated.

Non-compliance may lead to penalties, show-cause notices, suspension of student admissions, or even derecognition of courses.

The order follows two Supreme Court rulings that raised concerns over the lack of fee transparency and instances of unpaid stipends for interns and residents.

The move is part of NMC’s broader effort to improve accountability and student welfare in medical education by curbing non-transparent practices and ensuring fair treatment of medical trainees.

Established in 2020 as the successor to the Medical Council of India, the NMC is the apex body responsible for regulating medical education, maintaining standards, and advising on national healthcare policy.

Its responsibilities include setting academic standards, regulating institutions, and shaping national healthcare policies.
