S P Saju Bhaskar, Founder and President, Texila American University (TAU)
Immersive technology, global accreditations, and interdisciplinary learning are no longer aspirational—they're the new foundation of modern medical education. At the forefront of this evolution is Texila American University (TAU), under the visionary leadership of its Founder and President, S.P. Saju Bhaskar. From integrating AI and virtual reality into clinical training to aligning with global standards and national priorities like AI-driven drug discovery, TAU is setting benchmarks across continents. In an exclusive interview with Education Post, Prabhav Anand delves into Mr. Bhaskar’s strategic vision, the challenges of cross-border education, and the future-forward initiatives shaping the university’s next decade.
1. As the Founder and President of Texila American University (TAU), you've overseen its expansion across multiple countries. What have been the most significant challenges in maintaining a consistent educational standard across diverse cultural and regulatory landscapes?
Expanding TAU across various countries has required navigating diverse regulatory frameworks and cultural contexts. To maintain consistent educational standards, we've established a centralized quality assurance system and localised academic governance that ensures business process uniformity while allowing for localized adaptations as per the effective regulations. Regular audits and quality assurance measures help us uphold our commitment to excellence globally.
2. TAU has achieved multiple accreditations, including recognition from the Accreditation Commission on Colleges of Medicine (ACCM) and the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions (CAAM-HP). How have these accreditations influenced the university's international reputation and the opportunities available to your graduates?
Accreditations from ACCM and CAAM-HP have significantly enhanced TAU's international credibility, affirming our adherence to global medical education standards. These recognitions have opened pathways for our graduates to pursue licensure and postgraduate opportunities in various countries, including eligibility for exams like the USMLE and MCC.
3. In a recent discussion, you emphasized the importance of integrating technology, such as AI and virtual reality, into medical education. How is TAU implementing these technologies to enhance the learning experience, and what impact do you foresee on the future of medical training?
TAU is actively incorporating AI-driven learning platforms and virtual reality simulations into our curriculum to provide immersive, hands-on experiences. These technologies allow students to practice clinical procedures in a risk-free environment, enhancing skill acquisition and confidence. We believe this integration will produce more competent and adaptable medical professionals.
4. The Union Budget 2025 highlighted investments in AI for drug discovery and the establishment of centers for upskilling. How do you envision these initiatives aligning with TAU's mission, and what role can the university play in supporting such national objectives?
TAU's mission aligns closely with these initiatives, as we are committed to advancing medical research and education through technology. We aim to collaborate with governmental bodies to contribute to AI-driven drug discovery projects and establish upskilling centers that equip healthcare professionals with cutting-edge competencies.
5. Beyond traditional medical programs, TAU offers a range of online and distance learning courses. How do you ensure that these programs maintain the same level of rigor and engagement as on-campus offerings, especially in fields that are traditionally hands-on?
We ensure parity between online and on-campus programs by employing interactive digital platforms, virtual labs, and real-time assessments. Our distance learning curricula are designed to be as comprehensive and engaging as traditional classes, with continuous support from experienced faculty to facilitate effective learning outcomes.
6. With the global shift towards interdisciplinary education, is TAU exploring collaborations between its medical and business faculties to prepare students for the evolving healthcare industry? If so, could you provide examples of such initiatives?
Yes, TAU is fostering interdisciplinary collaborations to prepare students for the multifaceted healthcare industry. We offer programs that combine medical education with business management principles, equipping graduates with the skills needed to navigate healthcare administration and policy-making effectively.
7. Given the rapid advancements in medical technology and practices, how does TAU's curriculum stay current? What mechanisms are in place to ensure that students are learning the most up-to-date information and techniques?
TAU maintains curriculum relevance through regular reviews by academic committees comprising industry experts and faculty. We integrate the latest medical research findings and technological advancements into our courses, ensuring that students are trained in contemporary practices and methodologies.
8. TAU's vision emphasizes "Bringing Education to Life." How does this philosophy manifest in the day-to-day experiences of your students and faculty?
"Bringing Education to Life" is realized through experiential learning approaches, including clinical rotations, community engagement, and research projects. Students and faculty collaborate on real-world healthcare challenges, fostering a dynamic educational environment that transcends traditional classroom boundaries.
9. As an entrepreneur in the education sector, what trends do you foresee shaping the future of global medical education, and how is TAU positioning itself to lead in this evolving landscape?
Emerging trends such as personalized learning, telemedicine, and AI integration are reshaping medical education. TAU is at the forefront by adopting these innovations, developing flexible learning models, and expanding our global partnerships to provide students with diverse and future-ready educational experiences.
10. Reflecting on your journey with TAU, what initiatives or achievements are you most proud of, and what aspirations do you hold for the university's next decade?
I take pride in TAU's growth into a globally recognized institution with a diverse student body and robust academic programs. Looking ahead, we aspire to expand our research initiatives, enhance technological integration in education, and continue producing healthcare professionals who make meaningful contributions worldwide.
