The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has imposed fines on students who staged a play titled "Raahovan" during the institute's annual Performing Arts Festival (PAF).
The play, which is loosely based on the Indian epic "Ramayana," has been the center of controversy due to allegations of being disrespectful to Hindu culture and derogatory towards Lord Ram.

"Raahovan" was performed on March 31 by students from various departments and academic years. The play quickly drew significant criticism after videos of the performance spread widely on social media.
The contentious scenes featured conversations between the characters portraying Sita and Lakshman, which many viewers found offensive.
Complaints surfaced accusing the play of portraying these revered characters in a negative light and mocking Hindu religious sentiments.
In response to the backlash, IIT Bombay's disciplinary committee imposed strict penalties on the students involved.
Graduating students who participated in the play have been fined Rs 1.2 lakh each, an amount equivalent to nearly a semester's tuition at IIT Bombay.
Additionally, these students will not receive any recognition in the gymkhana awards, a notable exclusion from the institute's accolades.
Junior students who took part in the play face a fine of Rs 40,000 each. Furthermore, they have been banned from utilizing hostel facilities, adding a significant inconvenience to their campus life.
These measures reflect the institute's serious stance on the issue and its commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the complaints.
Despite the disciplinary actions, there has been a faction of support for the play. Proponents argue that "Raahovan" presented a feminist perspective on tribal society and was well-received by those who watched it without prejudice.
They contend that the play should be seen as a creative interpretation rather than an offensive piece.
However, IIT Bombay has remained tight-lipped regarding the specific actions taken against the students.
The institute has not issued any public statements detailing the reasons behind the penalties or addressing the broader controversy surrounding the play.
The disciplinary actions taken by IIT Bombay against the students involved in the play "Raahovan" underscore the institute's response to the significant social media backlash and complaints alleging disrespect towards Hindu culture.
The fines and penalties imposed reflect the serious nature of the allegations, despite the support from some quarters for the play's creative interpretation.
This incident highlights the ongoing debate over artistic expression and respect for cultural and religious sentiments in academic settings.
