IISc and Tata Group unveil collaborative medical school to revolutionize education and research in India

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Tata Group announced a collaboration on Jan 14 to open the Tata IISc Medical School on the IISc Bengaluru campus.

As per an agreement made, the Tata Group would contribute ₹500 crore towards the medical school's foundation.

By applying fundamental science and engineering to clinical science and practice, the Tata IISc Medical School aims to stimulate a novel approach to clinical research and medical education in India.

It will focus on a number of specialties, such as public health, infectious diseases, diabetes and metabolic disorders, neurology, nephrology, cardiology, oncology, and integrative medicine.

The Tata IISc Medical School will produce a new generation of medical technologists and physician-scientists by offering dual degree programs, including integrated MD-PhD.

The medical school and IISc's science and engineering labs will provide these students with simultaneous education that combines state-of-the-art clinical practice with scientific research.

The medical school wants to create a distinctive clinical research and training paradigm that other schools across the country can follow.

Also, it will work with world-class medical institutions to give students access to international practices, knowledge, and skills.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran said, "Healthcare is one of India's biggest challenges and also one of its greatest opportunities, given the scale at which technology will be able to transform everything from diagnosis to care and community health.”

“We are pleased to announce the establishment of the Tata IISc Medical School. In time, the institute’s emphasis on cutting-edge research and global collaboration will create a highly qualified cadre of physician-scientists trained in the latest approaches to modern medicine,” Chandrasekaran added.

“Their effect will be felt across the spectrum of healthcare and will help individuals access quality treatment. I believe that the Tata IISc Medical School will play a significant role in keeping our communities healthy and positioning India at the forefront of the global healthcare revolution,” continued Chandrasekaran.

Karnataka Minister for Commerce, Industries, and Infrastructure, MB Patil, has offered land for the Tata IISc Medical School in the upcoming Knowledge, Wellbeing, and Innovation (KWIN) City.

Spanning 5,800 acres between Dabaspet and Doddaballapur, KWIN City is a futuristic development consisting of four key districts: Knowledge, Health, Innovation, and Research.

“The Government of Karnataka would be delighted to make space for such an institution at KWIN City. We encourage IISc and the Tata Group to explore this project or consider future endeavors here. I will personally write to IISc and the Tata Group this week,” Patil wrote on X.

“We expect many more higher education and research institutions to take shape at KWIN. Karnataka will host a roundtable led by @CMofKarnataka for not-for-profits and foundations interested in investing in education, skilling, and innovation. Our aim is to make KWIN a one-of-a-kind destination in India,” Patil added.

Patil has initiated discussions with representatives from renowned institutions, including Johns Hopkins University and its Carey Business School, Bloomberg School of Public Health, and School of Medicine, as well as the University of Liverpool, University of East London, York University, and the University of Wolverhampton.

He has extended offers of land in KWIN City to these institutions.

“KWIN City aims to attract the top 500 foreign educational institutions to establish campuses in India by leveraging UGC regulations. This initiative will foster academia-industry partnerships, propelling Karnataka to the forefront of global education,” said Patil.

By drawing prestigious national and international hospitals, the city will also have a Life Sciences Park, establishing KWIN City as Asia's premier academic medical center and a leader in healthcare innovation, Patil continued.
