Himachal enforces anti-tobacco law around educational institutions

The Himachal Pradesh Police is taking firm action against the sale of tobacco products near schools, colleges, and coaching centers by strictly implementing the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003.

Since July 1, police teams across the state have been conducting checks in areas around educational institutions, including public markets and student gathering spots.

A statement from police headquarters issued on July 16 confirmed that several shops have been fined, tobacco items have been seized, and violators have been issued challans as part of the campaign.

In the Dehra police district alone, 210 challans were issued and ₹34,500 in fines were collected, a senior police officer said. Authorities are currently compiling data from other districts.

"The primary objective of the campaign is to reduce students' exposure to both passive smoking and an easy availability of tobacco products," Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Tewari said in the statement.

"By enforcing the COTPA rigorously, the Himachal Pradesh Police aims to instill a sense of responsibility among vendors and the public alike, promoting a healthier environment for youngsters," he added.

The police have also urged citizens to report any violations by contacting local police stations or using the designated helpline numbers.

Regular inspections will continue to ensure that areas near educational spaces remain tobacco-free.

"The Himachal Pradesh Police recognizes that tobacco use can often be a gateway to drug addiction. By curbing the sale of tobacco products, police also aim to deter shopkeepers from engaging in the sale of more harmful substances," the statement added.
