The students have created an affordable, automated IoT device that detects approaching animals and birds, helping farmers protect crops and reduce losses caused by wildlife.
Students from the Government Polytechnic College in Hamirpur have developed an IoT-based device designed to help farmers in Himachal Pradesh protect their crops from wild animals and birds.
The system, named the “Mass Surveillance Crop System,” targets a persistent problem in the hill state: crop damage caused by monkeys, wild boars, and other wildlife.
The project was created by students of the Information Technology department under the guidance of department head Pankaj Thakur and other faculty members.
The device functions as a sensor that emits a loud, gunshot-like sound when animals or birds approach, effectively deterring them from entering the fields.
“Monkeys, wild boars, and other wild animals often cause significant damage to crops in the hill state, and the device could prove effective in driving them away,” Thakur said, highlighting the potential benefits for local farmers.
Students Anjali and Sachin Chaudhary, who worked on the project, emphasized that the device is low-cost, simple to install, and requires minimal supervision.
It automatically activates upon detecting movement, unlike CCTV cameras that continuously record and store data. “It functions only when an animal or bird comes near,” they explained.
This innovation reflects the growing trend of student-led technological solutions for agriculture in India.
With its affordable and automated design, the IoT device could inspire similar initiatives aimed at addressing rural challenges and improving farming efficiency.
