Authorities in Mumbai have registered a case against a 32-year-old former IIT Bombay student for allegedly recording male students in the institute’s hostel while they were bathing, officials confirmed on Oct 17.

The incident was reported to Powai police on Oct 16 after IIT Bombay’s security inspector filed a complaint regarding the unauthorized recording and sharing of private videos and images of students, an official said.

According to the official, the alleged recordings took place on the fifth floor of Hostel No 14 at the Powai campus.

The accused, who completed his MTech in electrical engineering from IIT Bombay in July, had returned to the campus on a temporary two-day entry pass on Oct 11, recommended by a current student.

“As he is yet to get a job, he had come to the campus for two days on a temporary entry pass on the recommendation of a student on Oct 11. While staying at the hostel, he secretly recorded videos of the male students while they were bathing and using the toilet,” the official said.

Some students reportedly caught him in the act and handed him over to the institute’s security team.

Upon examining his phone, officials discovered multiple videos of students in bathrooms and toilets.

Since no student lodged a formal complaint, the security inspector filed the report under the direction of the institute administration.

A case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Information Technology Act, and further investigation is ongoing.
