White Ferns’ semi-final hopes hit as persistent downpours force another washout in Women’s World Cup 2025.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine expressed her frustration after her team’s crucial clash against Pakistan in Colombo was called off due to relentless rain on October 18. The washout dealt a blow to the White Ferns’ semi-final aspirations in the Women’s World Cup 2025.
New Zealand had Pakistan struggling at 52 for three in 12.2 overs when the first interruption struck. After play resumed, the White Ferns tightened the screws, reducing Pakistan to 92 for five in 25 overs—only for the weather to intervene once more. Thunder, lightning, and heavy rainfall ensured the match could not continue.

This marked the fifth game affected by rain in Colombo, with four matches ultimately abandoned, leaving players and fans alike disappointed. Speaking after the match, Devine lamented the lost opportunity.

“It’s really frustrating. You wait four years for a World Cup, and then the rain ends up playing such a massive role. We thought we had a chance, but unfortunately, it just didn’t happen,” Devine said. She also suggested that future editions could explore earlier start times to counter unpredictable weather.
Looking ahead, Devine emphasized the importance of bouncing back. “We need to win the next two games. We’ll go to Mumbai, prepare ourselves for the challenges, and focus on our upcoming matches. Playing against top teams in their home conditions is a real test, but we’re ready,” she added.
New Zealand will face India and England in their final two group-stage games in Navi Mumbai, hoping to reclaim momentum and secure a semi-final berth.
