DU tightens campus security following ministry alert

Delhi University has instructed its campuses, departments, and centers to enhance security measures following an alert from the Union Ministry of Education.

The advisory, based on an assessment by central security agencies, warned that higher education institutions remain “strategically vulnerable” and could be at risk of sabotage attempts.

The circular, issued on July 29 by the joint registrar (estate), refers to a ministry letter dated July 14.

It directs all universities to secure physical assets, coordinate closely with local police, and maintain strict vigilance.

To strengthen campus security, Delhi University has outlined detailed dos and don'ts for deans, department heads, directors, center administrators, and caretakers across the North and South Campuses.

According to the guidelines, offices must seek prior approval before opening on weekends or beyond official working hours.

No office can operate more than half an hour before or after regular timings without notifying the estate section or security cell.

“All visitors must present valid ID cards, and their entry will be recorded in the visitor register,” the notification said.

Parking of vehicles beyond regular hours or on holidays will also require prior clearance.

The advisory was prompted by a recent increase in thefts reported from North Campus buildings, leading authorities to adopt additional measures to safeguard university property and ensure student safety.

The move aligns with the ministry’s call for universities across the country to implement robust surveillance and safety protocols.

With thousands of students and faculty on campus every day, Delhi University emphasized that adherence to these rules is crucial to maintaining a secure learning environment.

By enforcing stricter checks and closer coordination with security agencies, the university aims to prevent any untoward incidents while ensuring smooth academic and administrative operations.
