A top Bengaluru school on May 27 indefinitely suspended two class 9 students who helped create and post AI-generated nude images of their classmates last week.

The morphed images of two 15-year-old students of Delhi Public School, North Bangalore were posted on an Instagram group, which has almost 50 members – all students of the same school – with derogatory messages.

Soon after Education Post broke the news on May 25 that the parent of one of the victims had filed a complaint with the city’s Cyber Crime Unit, the school swung into action and identified two of its students suspected of helping create, post and forward the nude images of the teenage girls.

“The school’s principal had called a major meeting today (May 27) of the parents of all the students involved. It seems they had somehow tracked the IP addresses of the students that had posted derogatory remarks below the images,” the mother of one of the victims told Education Post, adding that two of the students in the group then “admitted” that they were responsible for helping create and post the photographs along with an older boy from another school.

The parents of the two boys started beating them in front of the whole group, while the school authorities have suspended the two boys indefinitely, she said, adding that she was “very satisfied” with way the school has identified and initiated action against the culprits.

The school's principal Manju Balasubramanyam confirmed that the school had suspended the two boys after they confessed to their involvement. “They're not allowed to enter the school premises until the police complete their investigation,” she told Education Post.

Balasubramanyam said that her school takes matters like this very seriously, which is why they managed to identify the culprits even before the police. “We tend to be one step ahead of the police, because our students are our life and blood,” she said.

But just a suspension isn’t enough, the victim's mother said. “I want the culprits, whoever they are and however many they are, legally punished for what they have done. They need to realize they cannot objectify women like this, they cannot say such horrible things about girls.”

Meanwhile, a police official from Bengaluru’s Cyber Cell Unit said officials from the department have contacted the parents of one of the victims and will be talking to the school authorities to confirm the identity of the suspects.

“Based on the outcome of the investigation, arrests will be made soon,” the official told Education Post News, confirming that a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered.
