The Directorate of Education aligns school entry age with NEP 2020, restructuring early education to include three years of pre-primary learning before Class 1 starting in 2026.
Beginning with the 2026-27 academic year, schools in Delhi will require children to be at least six years old for admission to Class 1.
The move, announced by the Directorate of Education (DoE), brings the capital's admission policy in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
A circular issued by the DoE outlines changes in the foundational learning structure. Under the revised system, children will begin nursery or 'Bal Vatika' at age three, move to lower KG at four, and upper KG at five.
Class 1 admission will follow at age six. The circular noted, "The nomenclature for pre-primary classes is flexible and may be revised as required."
The NEP 2020 replaces the previous 10+2 model with a 5+3+3+4 format. This includes five years of foundational education, three years each of preparatory and middle school, and four years of secondary education.
The restructuring includes three years of pre-primary learning before Class 1.
The new age policy will be applicable to all government, government-aided, and recognized unaided private schools in Delhi. Schools are expected to comply fully with the revised age and academic structure.
To ensure a smooth and inclusive transition, the DoE is seeking feedback from a broad set of stakeholders such as parents, teachers, school authorities, education experts, and the general public.
Suggestions and inputs can be submitted until July 10, as stated in the official circular.
