What is Mallakhamb?

Mallakhamb (which translates to wrestling pole) is a traditional Indian sport in which competitors execute aerial yoga and gymnastic moves on a vertical pole or rope.

Purpose: Initially created as a training tool for wrestlers and fighters to enhance agility, strength, flexibility, and combat preparedness.

Historical Context:

Ancient Origins: Evidence of mallakhamb can be found in Chandraketugarh ceramics (1st–2nd century BCE) and in epics such as the Ramayana.

The earliest literary reference is found in Manasollasa (12th century) by King Someshvara III.

Maratha Renaissance: Resurrected in the 18th century by Balambhatta Dada Deodhar, mentor to Peshwa Bajirao II. Executed by individuals such as Rani Lakshmibai and Tantia Tope.

Contemporary Acknowledgment:

Showcased at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin.

Incorporated into the National Gymnastics Championships in 1958, it became an independent sport in 1962 (Gwalior).

Mallakhamb Federation of India was established in 1981.

Included in the Khelo India Youth Games since 2022.
