Key roads to be closed between Jan 19–21 for security preparations

Delhi Police have issued traffic advisories across central parts of the national capital as Republic Day 2026 parade rehearsals commence, leading to temporary road closures and diversions from 19 to 21 January. The restrictions are part of routine security and logistical preparations ahead of the annual national event on 26 January.
According to the advisory, Kartavya Path, particularly the stretch between Vijay Chowk and India Gate, will remain closed during morning hours on all three days of rehearsal. The restrictions are expected to be in force from early morning until the completion of rehearsal activities, impacting commuters travelling through central Delhi.

Delhi Police have advised motorists to plan their journeys in advance and avoid the restricted zones during the specified hours. Several alternate routes have been suggested to ease congestion and ensure smoother traffic flow. Commuters heading towards central Delhi, New Delhi railway station, or adjoining administrative areas have been urged to follow traffic updates and cooperate with on-ground personnel.
Authorities stated that the restrictions are essential to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of parade rehearsals, which involve movement of armed forces contingents, ceremonial equipment, and security personnel. Additional checks and barricading may also be put in place around sensitive installations and ceremonial routes.
Public transport services, including buses, are likely to be diverted, and passengers have been advised to check route changes before travel. Emergency vehicles will be allowed passage through designated corridors, subject to security protocols.
The Delhi Traffic Police have assured that adequate personnel will be deployed at major intersections to manage traffic and guide commuters. Real-time updates will be shared through official social media handles and traffic helplines.
With Republic Day preparations entering an advanced stage, residents are being reminded that such restrictions are temporary but necessary. Authorities have sought public cooperation to minimize inconvenience and ensure that the rehearsals, which are crucial to India’s most significant national ceremony, are conducted safely and efficiently.
Commuters are advised to remain alert, follow instructions, and allow extra travel time during the affected dates.
