STPI Strives to Promote IT Industry Expansion Across the Country

Software Technology Parks of India (STPI)

STPI is an organization established in 1991 under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to encourage the development of the IT/ITeS (Information Technology / Information Technology enabled Services) and

ESDM (Electronics System Design and Manufacturing) sector in India.

It was created to provide software certification, tax exemptions and benefits, along with high-speed data connections.

It was instrumental in transforming the emerging IT sector into a significant export-driven industry.

Main Office: New Delhi

Initial Focus Cities: The first STPIs were established in Bengaluru, Pune, and Bhubaneswar, significantly contributing to the early growth of the IT industry.

Economic Contributions: For the financial year 2024–25, units registered with STPI contributed around ₹10.59 lakh crore (approximately $110 billion) in software exports.

This figure represents more than fifty percent of India's overall software exports, which surpass $200 billion.

Broader Geographic Reach: STPI has grown to 67 centers nationwide, greatly enhancing its presence outside of conventional metropolitan areas.

Out of the total centres, 59 are situated in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, illustrating a deliberate initiative to expand IT development to less represented areas.

Decentralizing IT Services: The project seeks to introduce IT-enabled services (ITeS), software development, and business process management (BPM) prospects to smaller towns and cities.

Focusing on Young People and Local Business Owners: By positioning itself near educational facilities and smaller urban areas, STPI aims to enable youth and budding entrepreneurs to access digital opportunities.

Development of Extensive Incubation Facilities: STPI has constructed more than 17 lakh square feet of incubation area to assist new startups and tech enterprises.

Assistance for Startups and MSMEs: These incubation facilities are intended to host micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), particularly those concentrating on software products and services.

Policy Alignment and National Convergence

The updated mandate of STPI aligns with the Government of India’s key initiatives such as;

Under Digital India, STPI is developing digital infrastructure in remote and underserved regions.

Under Startup India, there is a focus on fostering early-stage innovation and entrepreneurship.

In accordance with Make in India, STPI promotes local technology creation and software manufacturing.

Path Forward

India's global dominance in IT has primarily been fueled by service exports, which, although important, provide restricted value enhancement over time.

To stay competitive in the changing digital environment, the nation must shift to a strong software product-oriented economy.

The National Policy on Software Products (NPSP) 2019 correctly highlights this shift by promoting local innovation and IP-driven development.
