ISRO will fully transfer its Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) technology to an Indian company, HAL

What is it?

Complete Technology Transfer (ToT) for ISRO’s SSLV, allowing an Indian company to autonomously develop and market the rocket.

Entities Involved: ISRO, IN-SPACe (space industry regulator), NSIL (commercial branch), HAL (beneficiary).

Granted By: IN-SPACe, following a two-phase national bidding procedure, where HAL secured victory with a ₹511 crore offer.

Goal: Enhance private involvement in space, facilitate commercial launch services, lessen reliance on ISRO for small satellite launches.

Characteristics:

HAL will possess the SSLV and has the ability to alter its design.

Complete production capacity — 6 to 10 rockets annually.

Initial ToT duration: 2 years with ISRO support.

HAL will autonomously manage future launches after ToT.
