New framework emphasises transparency, accountability, bias mitigation and human oversight, proposing sector-specific regulators and ethical audits for high-risk AI systems

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has released the National AI Ethics Framework, marking a significant step towards regulating the development and deployment of artificial intelligence in India. As AI adoption expands rapidly across sectors such as healthcare, finance, governance and law enforcement, concerns around bias, opacity and misuse have intensified, necessitating a comprehensive ethical framework.
The framework is anchored on core principles such as transparency, accountability, fairness, privacy protection and human oversight. It calls for AI systems to be explainable and auditable, especially when they are used for decision-making that affects citizens’ rights. To address discriminatory outcomes, the framework mandates bias mitigation measures across the AI lifecycle, from data collection to algorithmic deployment.

A major proposal under the framework is the creation of sector-specific AI regulators to account for the varied risks posed by AI in different domains. High-risk AI applications—such as those used in healthcare diagnostics, credit scoring, recruitment and policing—will be subject to ethical audits and impact assessments. These audits aim to evaluate risks related to accuracy, bias, data security and social impact before and during deployment.
The framework seeks to balance innovation with accountability, ensuring that AI-driven governance tools remain citizen-centric. By embedding ethical safeguards, it strengthens public trust in digital governance initiatives and reduces the risk of arbitrary or opaque automated decision-making. It also encourages responsible innovation by providing clear compliance standards for developers and users.
By releasing a National AI Ethics Framework, India aligns itself with global AI governance norms, such as those adopted by the OECD and the European Union. The move positions India as a responsible AI leader while safeguarding democratic values in the age of emerging technologies.
