Boost to Antarctic and Arctic research

India on Tuesday commissioned its first indigenously built Polar Research Vessel (PRV), marking a major milestone in the country’s polar and oceanographic research capabilities. The vessel has been designed to support scientific expeditions in the Antarctic and Arctic regions, significantly strengthening India’s long-term research presence in extreme polar environments.
The Polar Research Vessel will play a critical role in supporting India’s research stations in Antarctica — Maitri and Bharati — by facilitating the transportation of scientists, equipment and essential supplies. It will also enable sustained scientific missions in the Arctic, where India operates the Himadri research station in Svalbard, Norway. The commissioning of the PRV reduces India’s dependence on chartered foreign vessels for polar operations, enhancing strategic and logistical autonomy.

Equipped with advanced laboratories and state-of-the-art navigation systems, the vessel is capable of conducting climate studies, oceanographic surveys, atmospheric research, marine biodiversity assessments and glaciological investigations. Its ice-class capabilities allow it to navigate through polar ice-covered waters, ensuring year-round access to remote research zones. The vessel will also support deep-sea sampling and data collection critical for understanding climate change and its global impacts.
The PRV will operate under the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Earth Sciences. By strengthening NCPOR’s operational capacity, the vessel is expected to enhance India’s contribution to global scientific research on climate change, sea-level rise, polar ecosystems and cryosphere dynamics.
Strategically, the commissioning of an indigenous polar vessel reinforces India’s growing role in polar diplomacy and international scientific collaboration. It aligns with India’s commitments under the Antarctic Treaty System and supports global efforts in climate monitoring and environmental protection.
Experts view the development as a significant boost to India’s “Make in India” initiative and its expanding blue economy and maritime research ambitions. With the launch of the Polar Research Vessel, India has taken a decisive step towards becoming a leading contributor to polar science while advancing its understanding of climate systems that directly impact the Indian subcontinent.
