Digital Economy

The digital economy is expanding rapidly, accounting for 11.74% of the national income in 2022–23 and projected to rise to 13.42% by 2024–25.

The ICRIER-released State of India’s Digital Economy Report 2024 indicates that India currently holds the third position globally in terms of economic digitalisation.

By 2030, India's digital economy is expected to account for almost 20% of the nation's total economy, surpassing the expansion of conventional sectors.

Main Focus Areas and Services Within Digital India

Connectivity and Infrastructure: Digital India has developed robust digital infrastructure throughout the nation over the years. Mobile connectivity has reached nearly every village.

Telecom and Internet Penetration: Total telephone connections in India increased from 93.3 crore in 2014 to more than 120 crores in 2025, with tele-density growing from 75.23% to 84.49% by 2024.

UPI: As stated in the ACI Worldwide Report 2024, in 2023, India accounted for 49% of all real-time transactions worldwide. UPI is currently operational in more than seven nations, enhancing worldwide digital payments and financial inclusion.

Aadhaar: The e-KYC system utilizing Aadhaar has streamlined procedures in banking and public services. It accelerated verification, minimized documentation, and enhanced transparency across sectors.

Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT): DBT utilizes Aadhaar to provide welfare payments straight to beneficiaries and eliminate fraudulent recipients.

Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC): Established in 2022, ONDC assists small enterprises in accessing digital marketplaces. By 2025, it encompasses over 616 cities and has over 7.64 lakh registered sellers and service providers.

IndiaAI Mission: It emphasizes providing computing access, fostering innovation, enhancing datasets, financing startups, and promoting ethical AI practices.

By May 2025, India's national computing capacity surpassed 34,000 GPUs, representing a significant achievement in AI infrastructure development.

India Semiconductor Initiative: With a ₹76,000 crore budget, the initiative promotes domestic chip and display production.

It provides incentives for chip design and production as well as up to 50% support for fabs.

E-Government: By improving the accessibility, transparency, and efficiency of services, e-Government in India has completely changed how citizens engage with the government.

It includes programs like the UMANG App, DigiLocker, and Mission Karmayogi.
