Concerning CDS and the Secretary of the Department of Military Affairs Authorized to Provide Joint Directives:

What does it represent?

For the first time, CDS can deliver uniform instructions/orders relevant to the Army, Navy, and Air Force, enhancing both operational and administrative processes.

Previously: Each service gave commands for collaborative efforts, leading to duplication and sluggish coordination.

Currently, CDS issues a single cohesive joint order, ensuring synergy and a smooth command flow.

Aim of New Authorities:

Improve collaboration between services

Enhance command effectiveness

Simplify administrative processes

Establish foundation for unified theater commands

Importance:

Enhances the theaterization process

Enables Inter-Services Organisations (ISOs) as per ISO Act, 2023.

Allows quicker, cohesive military action in collaborative missions.

Enhances overall clarity, command cohesion, and resource efficiency.

Concerning the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS):

What does it refer to?

Rank equivalent to a 4-star General and Chief Military Advisor to the Defence Minister for joint service issues.

Additionally, the Permanent Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (CoSC).

Ministry: Leads the Department of Military Affairs (DMA), a specific division of the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Functions and Capabilities:

Provides guidance on tri-service strategy, collaborative planning, and acquisition.

Oversees capability enhancement and theaterization initiatives.

Supervises cross-departmental collaboration and resource allocation.

Does not exert direct military authority over the three service chiefs, who maintain complete command of their forces.

Directs structural changes focused on developing collaborative combat capabilities throughout the Armed Forces.
