Court directs authorities to prevent encroachment and safeguard ecologically sensitive wetland ecosystems

The Supreme Court of India has emphasised the need for strict enforcement of laws protecting wetlands across India. The court directed authorities to ensure that notified wetlands remain free from encroachment and illegal activities.
During the proceedings, the court highlighted the critical ecological role of wetlands and stressed that state agencies must take proactive steps to safeguard these fragile ecosystems. Authorities were instructed to implement existing environmental regulations effectively and prevent further degradation of protected wetland areas.

Wetlands perform several vital environmental functions. They help control floods, recharge groundwater, support biodiversity, and improve water quality. These ecosystems also serve as important habitats for migratory birds and aquatic species.
Experts note that protecting wetlands is essential for maintaining ecological balance and strengthening climate resilience. The court’s observations are expected to reinforce conservation efforts and ensure better governance in the management of wetland resources.
