Polls conducted for 37 seats across several states to ensure representation in the Upper House of Parliament

Elections were recently conducted for 37 seats of the Rajya Sabha following the completion of the terms of several sitting members. The elections took place across multiple states in accordance with the constitutional process for filling vacancies in the Upper House.
In some states, candidates were elected unopposed, while in others contests were held where members of the state legislative assemblies cast their votes. Members of the Rajya Sabha are elected by elected members of state legislative assemblies using the proportional representation system through a single transferable vote. This system ensures fair representation of political parties in the Upper House.

The Rajya Sabha plays an important role in India’s parliamentary democracy by representing the interests of the states at the national level. It participates in legislative debates, scrutinizes bills, and contributes to policymaking alongside the Lok Sabha.
These periodic elections ensure continuity in the functioning of Parliament and maintain the federal character of India’s legislative system. The Upper House remains essential for reviewing laws and providing stability in the legislative process.
