The Governor serves as the constitutional leader of a State and functions as a connection between the Union and State administrations.
Article 153 states that every State is to have a Governor, and one individual may be appointed for multiple States.

The President appoints the Governor (Article 155), who serves at the President's discretion, although the typical term is five years (Article 156).
Eligibility: An individual must be an Indian citizen aged 35 years or older (Article 157) and must not be a member of Parliament or a State Legislature, nor occupy any other profit-making position (Article 158).

He/she selects the Chief Minister, who then advises on the appointment of the Council of Ministers and the distribution of their portfolios.
The Governor likewise appoints the Advocate-General, along with the Chairman and members of the State Public Service Commission.
Furthermore, the Governor appoints judges for lower courts and is involved in the President's selection of High Court judges.
Legislative: The Governor plays a crucial role in the State Legislature, possessing various legislative authorities.
Governors can call, suspend, or dissolve the Legislature (Article 174), communicate with the House (Article 175), and are required to provide a special address at the beginning of the first session each year or following general elections (Article 176).
For a bill to be enacted, the Governor’s approval is necessary; he/she may authorize, deny, send it back for review, or hold it for the President. When the Legislature is on break, the Governor can enact ordinances that need to be ratified within six weeks of the Assembly's return.
