UNICEF has recognised Kerala's KITE initiative as a global best practice in responsible EdTech

What does KITE refer to?

Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) serves as the technological division of Kerala’s General Education Department. It was created to incorporate digital resources and AI in education while maintaining transparency, inclusivity, and the independence of teachers.

Inaugurated by: Kerala Government

Aim: To facilitate ethical, fair, and open-source-driven AI incorporation in public education; to empower educators and safeguard student data ownership.

Main Characteristics of the KITE AI Project:

Mass Teacher Training: Educated over 80,000 teachers (Grades 8–12) on essential AI applications, covering bias identification, privacy issues, and curricular alignment.

Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS): Implemented in over 15,000 schools, guaranteeing independence, affordability, and openness in AI solutions.

Samagra Plus AI Platform: Kerala’s tailored RAG-based AI system designed by skilled educators; directly connected to state syllabus to prevent test-preparation or bias issues.

Student-Focused Innovation: Little KITEs IT Clubs educate students in robotics and AI via experiential, contextual learning; recognized by UNICEF as a model practice worldwide.

Data Sovereignty & Bias Immunity: KITE utilizes internal infrastructure and public datasets, steering clear of commercial surveillance frameworks and guaranteeing AI responses that resist bias.
