Agreements on peacekeeping, education, and technology mark a new phase in India–Ethiopia relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began an official visit to Ethiopia aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and expanding India’s engagement with Africa. The visit underscored India’s commitment to deepening strategic partnerships on the continent through cooperation in capacity-building, development, and global governance.
During the visit, several agreements were signed covering key areas of cooperation. India and Ethiopia agreed to collaborate on United Nations peacekeeper training, reflecting India’s long-standing role as one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping missions. Enhanced training cooperation is expected to strengthen Ethiopia’s peacekeeping capabilities and promote international peace and security.

Agreements were also concluded on education cooperation, focusing on skill development, institutional partnerships, and knowledge exchange. In the technology domain, both sides agreed to collaborate on tech and data-centre projects, supporting Ethiopia’s digital transformation and strengthening technological linkages between the two countries. India also extended support for debt-management assistance under the G20 Common Framework, highlighting its role in advocating sustainable debt solutions for developing countries.
In recognition of his contribution to strengthening bilateral relations, Prime Minister Modi was conferred Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the Great Honor Nishan Ethiopia. The gesture symbolised growing mutual trust and respect between the two nations.
The visit holds broader strategic significance as it reinforces India–Africa ties and advances South–South cooperation. By expanding collaboration in peacekeeping, education, and technology, India is enhancing its soft power and reinforcing its role as a reliable development partner and responsible global actor in Africa.
