India–France Deepen Cooperation in Nuclear Energy and Space

India and France have signed a series of new agreements to deepen cooperation in civil nuclear energy and space technology, marking an expansion of their long-standing strategic partnership beyond the defence sector. The agreements reflect growing convergence between the two countries on clean energy transition, advanced technologies and global climate objectives.

In the nuclear energy domain, the two sides agreed to enhance collaboration in civil nuclear power generation, with a renewed focus on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). SMRs are viewed as a key next-generation technology due to their lower capital costs, enhanced safety features and suitability for flexible deployment. Cooperation is expected to cover research and development, technology exchange, regulatory frameworks and capacity-building, supporting India’s efforts to expand clean and reliable base-load power.

The partnership also reinforces ongoing collaboration on large nuclear projects, including technical cooperation, fuel cycle management and nuclear safety standards. France, with its advanced nuclear expertise, remains a key partner in India’s plans to diversify its clean energy mix and reduce carbon emissions.

In the space sector, India and France agreed to expand cooperation in satellite navigation, earth observation and climate monitoring. The agreements aim to strengthen data-sharing and joint missions to improve weather forecasting, disaster management and climate change assessment. Enhanced collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and French space agency CNES will support innovation in satellite technology and applications.

The space cooperation also includes joint work on maritime domain awareness, space situational awareness and the peaceful use of outer space. These initiatives have both civilian and strategic significance, contributing to environmental monitoring as well as regional and global security.

The expanded cooperation underscores the depth of the India–France strategic partnership, which is anchored in shared democratic values and commitment to multilateralism. By extending collaboration into nuclear energy and space, both countries are positioning their partnership as a key driver of technological innovation, climate action and sustainable development in the coming decades.
