Securing Supply Chains for Clean Energy and Strategic Industries

India and Australia have taken steps to strengthen their partnership in critical minerals, expanding cooperation in resources such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements. These minerals are essential inputs for clean energy technologies, electric vehicles (EVs), battery storage systems, electronics, and advanced manufacturing, making them strategically vital for future economic growth and energy security.
Australia possesses abundant reserves of critical minerals and is a leading global producer, while India has a rapidly growing demand driven by its renewable energy expansion, EV adoption, and industrial transformation. The enhanced partnership seeks to leverage these complementary strengths through long-term supply agreements, joint exploration projects, and collaboration in mining, processing, and downstream value addition.

A key objective of the cooperation is supply chain diversification and resilience. At present, global critical mineral supply chains are highly concentrated, exposing countries to geopolitical and market risks. By working closely with Australia, India aims to reduce its dependence on limited sources and ensure reliable access to key inputs required for its clean energy and manufacturing ambitions.
The partnership also promotes technology collaboration and investment. It encourages Indian public and private sector entities to invest in Australian mining and processing projects, while facilitating knowledge sharing on sustainable mining practices, environmental safeguards, and recycling of critical minerals. This aligns with both countries’ emphasis on responsible and environmentally sound resource development.
Strategically, the initiative fits within broader bilateral frameworks such as the India–Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and complements cooperation under the Quad, which emphasises secure and transparent supply chains for critical technologies. It also supports India’s initiatives such as Make in India and its commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions.
Significance
Strengthening the critical minerals partnership enhances supply chain security and supports India’s energy transition and EV goals. It deepens India–Australia strategic cooperation, reduces vulnerability to global disruptions, and contributes to sustainable and resilient economic growth.
