India recently co-led a significant meeting of the Group of Friends for Accountability regarding Crimes Against Peacekeepers
History of UN Peacekeeping
UN Peacekeeping started in 1948 with the creation of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in the Middle East to oversee ceasefires.
It primarily concentrated on unarmed monitoring and mediation.
Throughout the Cold War, activities were constrained because of worldwide political tensions.
Following the Cold War, peacekeeping grew substantially, featuring multidimensional missions that tackled civil disputes, provided governance support, safeguarded human rights, and focused on humanitarian initiatives.
Current missions prioritize civilian safety, gender equity, and collaborations with regional entities.
What does UN Peacekeeping entail?
UN Peacekeeping is an essential tool employed by the United Nations to uphold international peace and security.
The UN Peacekeepers, referred to as Blue Helmets, derive their name from the light blue shade of the United Nations flag. In 1947, the UN chose this hue because blue represents peace, whereas red is frequently associated with conflict. This light blue hue has since come to represent the UN.
It functions concurrently with other UN initiatives, such as conflict prevention, peacemaking, peace enforcement, and peacebuilding.
India's Role in UN Peacekeeping
India has a rich and notable history of involvement in UN peacekeeping, starting with its engagement in the UN operation in Korea in 1953.
India’s dedication to non-violence, rooted in its philosophy and advocated by Mahatma Gandhi, coincides with the UN’s strategy for fostering global peace.
This commitment arises from India’s timeless principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the entire world is my family), highlighting the unity of humanity and the significance of harmonious coexistence.
Since the 1950s, India has deployed more than 290,000 peacekeepers to over 50 missions globally, establishing itself as the foremost contributor to UN peacekeeping initiatives.
Currently, more than 5,000 Indian soldiers are deployed in nine out of the eleven active missions, frequently in perilous and adversarial areas, committed to maintaining global peace and security.
Problems and Worries
While serving in hazardous regions, UN peacekeepers are subject to severe threats and violence, but the majority of crimes against them go unpunished.
International peace efforts are hampered by this lack of accountability.
Since 1948, hostile acts have resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 peacekeepers, according to UN data.
Over 300,000 peacekeepers have been sent by India, one of the biggest donors to UN missions; 182 of them have lost their lives while serving.
Way Ahead India's strong commitment to international peace, security, and multilateralism is demonstrated by its participation in UN peacekeeping.
Calling accountability a strategic necessity for the success of international peacekeeping missions, India recently reaffirmed its strong commitment to ensuring justice for crimes committed against UN peacekeepers.
