South–South cooperation on sustainable energy and farming

India and Brazil have signed two key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening cooperation in biofuels and agricultural technology, reinforcing South–South collaboration in sustainable energy transition and food security. The agreements reflect the shared priorities of both countries as major emerging economies with strong agricultural bases and growing energy demands.
The first MoU focuses on second-generation (2G) biofuel technology, which involves the production of biofuels from agricultural residues, non-food biomass and waste materials. Cooperation in this area will enable knowledge sharing, joint research and technology transfer in advanced bioethanol and bioenergy production. For India, this partnership aligns with its National Bio-Energy Mission and ethanol blending targets, while Brazil brings global expertise as a leader in sugarcane-based bioethanol production.

The second MoU relates to agricultural mechanisation and crop resilience research, with emphasis on climate-resilient farming practices, precision agriculture and farm machinery suited for small and marginal farmers. The collaboration aims to enhance productivity, reduce post-harvest losses and improve farmers’ incomes through technology-driven solutions.
Both MoUs envisage cooperation between government agencies, research institutions and private sector stakeholders. Joint pilot projects, capacity-building programmes, expert exchanges and collaborative R&D initiatives are expected to form the backbone of implementation. Special attention will be given to sustainable farming methods that reduce environmental impact while maintaining food security.
The agreements also have broader strategic significance. As members of groupings such as BRICS, G20 and IBSA, India and Brazil have consistently advocated greater cooperation among developing countries to address global challenges. Enhanced collaboration in clean energy and agriculture strengthens their collective voice on climate action, sustainable development and equitable growth.
Experts view the MoUs as mutually beneficial, combining Brazil’s technological expertise with India’s scale and policy-driven market opportunities. The partnership is expected to contribute to energy security, climate mitigation and resilient food systems, while deepening India–Brazil bilateral ties within the framework of South–South cooperation.
