Nagorno-Karabakh

What is the disagreement?

Tsarist Russia governed the South Caucasus in the 19th century, but its power waned following the 1917 Russian Revolution.

The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has roots that stretch back almost a century, beginning during World War I when Ottoman and Azeri troops focused on ethnic Armenians in the South Caucasus.

Nagorno-Karabakh, mainly an Armenian area in Azerbaijan, turned into a significant hotspot, stemming from ethnic, religious, and geopolitical conflicts.

With the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh proclaimed independence, resulting in a conflict that persisted until 1994 and resulted in approximately 30,000 fatalities.

A ceasefire mediated by Russia was established, yet borders stayed unresolved despite global peace initiatives.

In 2020, Azerbaijan initiated a successful military campaign, reclaiming adjacent lands with assistance from Turkey and Pakistan.
