India & France launch global dialogue on ethical AI governance

India and France jointly hosted a high-level curtain-raiser titled “From Action to Impact” at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, marking the formal build-up to the AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled to be held in New Delhi on 19–20 February 2026. The event brought together policymakers, diplomats, technology experts, multilateral institutions and private-sector leaders to deliberate on the future of ethical, inclusive and accountable artificial intelligence.
What happened:
The curtain-raiser focused on translating global AI principles into actionable governance frameworks. Discussions centred on responsible AI development, data protection, algorithmic transparency, digital public infrastructure, and reducing the global AI divide between developed and developing countries. India and France highlighted the need for human-centric AI, aligned with democratic values, human rights and sustainable development.

The event also underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing risks posed by AI, such as misinformation, bias, job displacement and national security threats, while simultaneously harnessing AI’s potential for public good in sectors like healthcare, education, climate action and governance.
India–France partnership:
India and France have emerged as key advocates for global AI governance that balances innovation with safeguards. India’s experience with Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) such as Aadhaar, UPI and CoWIN was showcased as a scalable model for inclusive digital transformation. France emphasised alignment with EU-style regulatory approaches while accommodating innovation from emerging economies.
Why it matters:
Conclusion:
The UN curtain-raiser positions the AI Impact Summit 2026 as a critical forum for shaping the future of AI governance. By jointly leading this dialogue, India and France are advancing a vision of AI that is innovative yet responsible, global yet inclusive, and firmly anchored in human values.
